The Berkeley Rent Stabilization Board is a group of 9 commissioners who work with city staff to regulate rent increases, enforce tenant protections and regulations, and help marginalized community members access safe and affordable housing. Commissioners’ terms last 4 years, and they have a term limit of 2 terms/8 years.
The Rent Board acts as the voice of the Berkeley rental community by making recommendations to the City and the State for how to address housing issues, and offers a range of services to Berkeley residents. Tenants experiencing illegal rent increases, unsafe living conditions, and lost services such as parking, storage, or working appliances can file petitions to start a legal hearing. Landlords and tenants receive education and outreach around their rights, responsibilities, and rules. The Board can provide mediation services between landlords and tenants during a dispute. The Rent Board meets every 3rd Thursday of the month at 7pm. You may give public comment on crucial issues in person or on Zoom. Learn more at the Rent Board’s official site.
The election is Tuesday, November 3rd. The last day to register to vote is October 19th. California has same day voting registration, so you can vote even if you miss the October deadline! Learn more.
Our slate is fighting for an explicitly pro-tenant majority on the Rent Board. With 5 out of 9 seats up for election this year, voters must ensure that progressive programs and housing equity remain a priority for the Board.
